Made with non-conductive resin, the nests are placed on company towers high above the power lines, where the birds are unlikely to cause any trouble. To fight back, Chubu started installing artificial " love nests" in 2004. The result was an epidemic of crow-caused blackouts in major cities around Japan: Between 20, the corvids stole almost 1400 fiber-optic cables from Tokyo power providers, and according to the Chubu electric company, crows are responsible for around 100 power failures per year in their facilities alone. Urban crows like to nest on electric transformers and will often use wire hangers or fiber-optic cables as building materials for their nests. Since the 1990s, crows have experienced a population boom in Japan, where-not coincidentally-delicious garbage is more plentiful than ever before. Why do they do this? Some studies suggest that the mass gathering is part of a survival strategy: The birds are learning about threats and seem hesitant to revisit any spot where they've encountered a dead crow, even if food is plentiful there. During this ritual, the live crows almost never touch the dead one, which rules scavenging out as a motive. The sight of a dead crow tends to attract a mob of a hundred or more live ones. When a crow dies, its neighbors may have a funeral. And some birds become regular nest assistants, providing aid to their parents for over half a decade. One study found that 80 percent of American crow nests surveyed had a helping hand. Other services they can provide include bringing food to mom and dad, or feeding their younger siblings directly. Juvenile birds are frequently seen defending their parents' nest from predators. During the winter months, they'll congregate with hundreds or even thousands of their peers to sleep together at night in a sprawling communal unit called a roost.Ĭome nesting season, a mated pair of crows might be lucky enough to receive chick-rearing help. For instance, American crows spend most of the year living in pairs (they usually mate for life) or small family groups. Like a lot of intelligent animals, most crows are quite social. Older crow siblings can help their parents raise newborn chicks. You can hear crow vocalizations here and raven vocalizations here. Only occasionally will a raven make a call similar to a crow's caw, but even then it is so deep as to be fairly easily distinguished from a real crow." "American crows make the familiar caw-caw, but also have a large repertoire of rattles, clicks, and even clear bell-like notes," McGowan writes, whereas common ravens have "a deep, reverberating croaking or gronk-gronk. And the birds' calls are substantially different. McGowan of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology writes on his crow FAQ page, ravens soar longer than crows, and you can see through their wing feathers as they fly (among other differences). One big indicator is size: The common raven is much larger, about the size of a red-tailed hawk. Telling them apart can be tough, but it is possible for eagle-eyed birders. In the U.S., when people talk about crows and ravens, they're usually referring to the American crow ( Corvus brachyrhynchos) and the common raven ( Corvus corax). Despite its informal name, the so-called Australian raven is more closely akin to the Torresian crow than it is to the common raven. But pervasive as these labels may be, they're not scientific and do not reflect the latest research. There's also a large-beaked outlier known as the rook, which was named after the unusual sound it makes. Mid-sized members of the genus are usually called crows, while the very smallest species go by the name jackdaws. Historically, the name raven has been given to several of the big-bodied Corvus birds with shaggy feathers on their necks. Colloquially, some of them are referred to as ravens while others are called crows, rooks, or jackdaws. To date, scientists have named 40 species. Members of the genus Corvus can be found on every continent except Antarctica and South America (although other close relatives live there). All crows and ravens belong to the same genus. Here are a few facts about these crafty corvids that might surprise you. But the birds are fascinating creatures, adaptable and brainy to an extent that's almost scary. In many Western cultures, they've historically been associated with death, disease, and bad omens reviled as crop-stealers by farmers, and condemned as nuisances by city dwellers.

They’re also intelligent dogs, and like Whippets they are affectionate, loving and loyal and they make excellent family pets. It’s an athletic and strong breed, with a short single coat that’s often red or brown. Komba tend to measure between 17″ to 25″ and weigh 15lbs to 55lbs. The Kombai is also famous for its hunting ability (aren’t all Sighthounds), and it too is medium-sized. Yet another breed of Sighthound from India, and also from Tamil Nadu like the Kanni. Like many breeds of Sighthound, the Kaikadi is a little reserved around strangers but completely loyal to its “family”. As a consequence, Kaikadis are often kept in packs for hunting small prey. Most people think of healthy Whippets as lean but Kaikadis are perhaps even more slight.Īlthough they’re small (measuring 15″ to 18″ and weighing up to 44lbs ) they’re extremely fast and alert. Like the Chippiparai, the Kaikadi is another breed from India. They also share the same temperament of Whippets and as a result make very popular pets.įind out about the Whippet Italian Greyhound mix. They share the same elegant posture, deep chest, pinched waist and slender head. In terms of their physical characteristics they really do resemble Whippet puppies. Raised in Italy, the Italian Greyhound is actually very old having its origins in ancient Rome.Īnother personal favourite of mine, the “Iggy” as people call it informally, looks like a miniature English Greyhound or small Whippet! They measure between 12.5″ and 15″ at the shoulder and weigh at a maximum of 14lbs! Sighthound bodies tend to be very lean… in fact many people mistakenly believe that some breeds are underfed or malnourished.īy contrast to the Irish Wolfhound, the Italian Greyhound is one of the smaller of Sighthound breeds… the smallest in fact. Dolichocephalic heads are long and narrow, the noses especially appear long and slender. Physical Characteristics of Sighthound BreedsĪs a general rule, Sighthound breeds have a dolichocephalic head shape. These attributes enable them to run at high speeds while remaining able to change direction quickly. For this scenario, speed and a keen sense of sight are more desirable.Īlong with powerful eyesight, Sighthound breeds also tend to share very similar physical attributes. Sighthound breeds on the other hand were bred to develop skills to catch fast and agile prey over short distances. In this scenario a strong sense of smell and physical endurance are advantageous. Scent hounds were bred to enhance their capacity to catch prey over long distances. For centuries dogs were bred to develop specific traits to help catch certain prey. Sighthounds are a particular group of dogs primarily bred for their capacity to hunt.

And 1976dave, who says he’s an inch taller and five pounds heavier than me, calls the Eddie Bauer Legend Wash Short-Sleeve T-Shirt “his favorite shirts by a mile.”įor more of an IRL perspective, I contact the other shmediums in my life. Unbeknownst to me, Muji, purveyor of fine knick-knacks like aroma diffusers and wicker stationary trays, makes a commendable T-shirt for the shmedium man, according to one commenter. Uniqlo also came up, though historically, they’ve been too delicate for my frame. Such as: Hanes Beefy-T’s, which I respect on the name alone. I also got a handful of specific brand suggestions. Someone mistaking me for a “fitness bro douche” may interrogate me for my weightlifting stats.Wearing a shirt that tightly cuffs the arms and shoulders might send the signal that I’m a “fitness bro douche.” (This concern might contribute to the aforementioned perspiration.).An unexpected drop in temperature can result in conspicuous “ice nips”.From a comfort perspective, tighter shirts are less comfortable, and seem to prompt a perspiration response from my armpits. But personally, I avoid the “medium” for four main reasons: “If you’ve been working out and you’re confident in how your body looks, then you’ll look good, even if something isn’t necessarily fitting you perfectly in all areas.” Finally, some just stated the obvious - suggesting I should simply bite the bullet and wear a medium. Still, not everyone strives for perfection in this regard. Several people also suggested buying large shirts, and then having them altered, which is beyond my patience or capabilities, but shows the lengths some men will go to find the right fit. If you buy those skin-tight clothes like the fitness bro douches on Instagram wear, then I think you might be pushing it a little.” Vintage and loopwheeled (the antiquated loopwheel machines apparently produce superior quality garments) T-shirts were recommended, too, as the cut better fits shmediums. Another opined, “Just because the sleeves and shoulders are a little snug doesn’t mean you’re trying too hard. You worked hard for them,” read the top comment. “top being scared of showing off your muscles. The reactions were varied, but all were helpful in their own ways. And so, using the handle shmedium_mane, I made an inquiry: It doesn’t have an impervious track record, but with 1.3 million followers, there was at least the potential for a large sample size of opinions. #Smedium for medium how toIn the absence of professional advice of how to bridge the shmedium gap, I turned to the logical alternative: Reddit, specifically r/MaleFashionAdvice. (Also important to note: “Shmedium” as colloquially used, does NOT refer to a size between small and medium.) This sentence in particular demonstrates the inconsistency in the Rice University definition: “Take off that shmedium man, we know you aren’t that big” - as if being larger would justify a smaller shirt.Ĭould then the entire shmedium conundrum be avoided by going up a size? This unfortunately presents a new, but related problem: Often, you’ll look like a child swimming in their clothes, which ultimately gives off an unwanted youthfulness. Though the initial definition is relatively accurate (a shirt too small for the wearer), the overall sentiment is wrong. The Mirage logos on the original towers will be replaced with Hard Rock branding, as shown in renderings released by the company. Not only will the property get a new name, the resort will also get a new look, including a massive guitar-shaped structure similar to other Hard Rock buildings around the world. With this change of ownership, The Mirage Resort property will rebrand as the Hard Rock Las Vegas. MIRAGE LAS VEGAS LICENSEMGM will retain the Mirage name and brand but license it back to Hard Rock for up to three years while the new owners work out a final plan for the resort’s redevelopment. In December 2021, MGM Resorts announced that they had sold The Mirage to Hard Rock International in a $1.075 billion cash deal that is expected to close in the second half of 2022, according to a statement released by MGM. In 2000, The Wynn empire was sold to MGM Resorts for $4.4 billion. Steve followed the Mirage with Treasure Island (1993) and then the Bellagio (1998). Steve Wynn was the man behind the resort and to say it changed the Vegas Strip is an understatement! It was the first of what we now call a “Mega-Resort” with over 2,000 rooms. The Mirage opened on the Las Vegas Strip, on October 26, 1989. It’s been a long time since we have seen a company opening in Las Vegas that shot itself in the foot before they even have the keys to the place! But that is the subject of another Vlog! Image: Hard Rock International Background In replacing the popular and iconic volcano with a neon-lit hotel tower will be known as one of the biggest marketing blunders in Las Vegas history! Looking at what they already have stated about their plans for the resort, this will not be their only blunder. As always, it did not disappoint and the crowds, of course, loved it. With that news and no set timeline announced on when the volcano will go away, other than “soon”, I figured I needed to go see it one last time. Seeing Caroline drive up to the mysterious hospital, on her own, at night, made me roll my eyes.Īnyway, of course, things turned worse for Caroline. In Resident Evil 2, Claire Redfield came to Raccoon City looking for her missing brother and got stuck in the unexpected zombie outbreak. Talking about the RE titles, while not featuring the most well-written stories, at least, the writers added some emotion to the premise. Maybe go to therapy instead? Also, who dresses like that? That’s why she decided to visit the Wildberger Hospital two weeks after receiving the letter. Caroline just can’t get them out of her head. According to the game, after getting the letter, she’s been having horrific dreams involving the girls. I would have preferred the writing team to explain Caroline’s actions better. Is Caroline an investigator looking for the next big scoop? Is the letter from an old friend who needs her help? What is going on with her outfit? However, getting a bit more context would have helped the narrative. Now, I’m not against Caroline snooping around. Anyway, for some reason, Caroline decides to figure out what happened to the girls and makes her way to an old mansion that functions as a creepy hospital. You can tell Caroline’s connected to the girls somehow because she gets a headache when she looks at the picture. Caroline Walker gets a mysterious letter that has a picture of two young girls. Set in Canada, the premise is simple enough. It might not be perfect but for classic RE fans, it will scratch the itch the newer RE installments haven’t been able to. And there are a whole lot of puzzles to solve while you try to survive mutated beings that are out to kill you. The protagonist, Caroline Walker, moves around via tank controls. While playing this game, you will remember the earlier Resident Evil and Silent Hill installments as you move around a creepy establishment.
